Occupational therapists provide support to people whose health prevents them doing the activities that matter to them.  Another way of putting this is that occupational therapists enable people to achieve health, wellbeing and life satisfaction through participation in occupation.

An occupational therapist can help identify a person's strengths, as well as difficulties they may have in everyday life, such as dressing or getting to the shops.

Occupational therapists can work with a person to identify goals,  and small steps that can help regain, or improve independence, by using different techniques, changing the environment, or by using new equipment.  Occupational therapists work with people of all ages to look at all aspects of daily life, from the home, to the school, or workplace to find practical solutions to everyday difficulties.

Independent (private) occupational therapists are usually able to provide a service in a more timely way than statutory services, but that does come at a cost.

Occupational Therapy approaches

After identifying the difficulties a person has with everyday tasks/occupations, an occupational therapist can help by either:
  • practising the activity in manageable stages,
  • suggesting a different way to complete the activity,
  • recommending environmental changes that will make the activity possible,
  • providing devices that make the activity easier.
